There's been some talk about Urban Fantasy on the web lately (here and here for instance, but you'll have to sift through the posts to find the UF ones on your own) and as a result, I've been thinking. Dangerous, right? I know the genre's been getting hotter, but I've only really started digging into it and reading. I'm not reading tons of it, I seem to have focused on a few authors and glommed their stuff.
Do you read UF? Which authors/series? Any of those authors/series you'd heartily recommend? Do you have any pet peeves about the genre? Particular loves about the genre? Do you like it with a little romance, no romance, or a lot of romance?
Talk to me about what you like and dislike in UF.

I don't really read it only because I've never been that into the fantasy genre in general. I don't even care for fantasy movies - Lord of the Rings? Yeah, yawn (at least for me). Bu it's hot right now. And there are some cool sounding books, especially in the UF genre which I would be more inclined to read (I think it's the word urban that appeals to me)...

I think one of the biggest differences between UF and PR is that there is no guaranteed HEA in a UF.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I've read much UF except maybe Patricia Briggs. She's considered to write UF right? Her MT series is good, but it didn't strike a chord with me the way Cry Wolf did (the beginning of her Alpha & Omega series). Probably because it had a lot more romance, which is a must for me. That being said, practically all the ladies at Desert Island Keepers love Meljean Brook so maybe check her out if you haven't already.

ReplyDeleteJim Butcher's Dresden Files. Excellent series. I highly recommend it.
Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse (of which I've read all and you did last year) is considered UF.
Deb Dixon recommends Anne Bishop for UF. She has The Black Jewels Trilogy. I haven't read it yet but I have it in my Amazon list to buy.
Never read urban fantasy, though it sounds interesting.
