The Devil Is Dead

I finally heard back from the data recovery center about my computer yesterday. Not good. All the data they pulled off was corrupted. Nothing is recoverable. Nothing.

I'm going to wallow in self-pity for a few days since the best book I've ever written is now forever lost to the ether. Sure, I've got the first 179 pages of an early draft, but I can't even think about rebuilding it right now. Date With The Devil is officially dead.

I'm going to work on a novella I've been asked to do, after that, there's a YA I'd like to tackle. I'll reassess Date at that point and see what I feel up to.
Back up your work externally, people. Trust me on this one.

  1. {{{Kristen}}} Sorry to hear about the data was corrupted. It usually is when the hard disk dies. I learned this the hard way back in '95 with my first 'puter.

Good luck with your writing projects! You sure are busy writing! Heh!

  2. I'm sorry to hear your data is dead. That's horrible. You have my deepest sympathy. Maybe when the grieving process is over, you'll find a way to resurrect your lost book. Maybe it'll turn out even better the second time around.

  4. OH No! This is the most distressing news ever. :(
    Major {{{HUGS!!}}}, Kristen.

I hope that somehow you will revisit the book that almost was.... B.E. is right. I've actually heard about catastrophes like this where they lose all and rewrite it tighter and brighter than before.
My wish for you is that you'll be blessed that way too.

  6. Oh, Kristen. That's awful. I'm so sorry to hear you lost your manuscript. Even though I know better, I'm really bad about backing up my manuscripts. My source code for work I back up twice a day, but not my manuscripts. Stupid, huh?

When I got a new computer a few weeks ago, I bought a copy of Norton 360, and it has a built-in utility for off-site backup. You can pick which directories you want to archive and how often, and you don't have to remember to do it.

  8. Ugh, I'm sure your next book will be even better than Date. Focus on what ever good you can and make your writing better.
