Back at work

One of my big goals today is to make some headway on my novella. Yesterday turned out to be a bust writing-wise. (I got a lot of other stuff done, though. Including cleaning out and reorganizing some of my drawers.)

I don't know why the novella is giving me such fits. I like the story and the characters, I just can't seem to fit the right amount of story into those few pages. I'm so used to writing long that wrapping my head around this length is proving really difficult.

It's just a mini-version of a novel, so why can't I get it?

Any suggestions? Links to articles that might help me? I'm game for anything.

  1. I'm having the same issue. Too much plot, not enough words. The romance is suffering because of it. I've done it before, but this is kicking my butt.

  2. Wish I could help you but I know nothing of novellas. Hope you find some good articles. :-)

  3. It's one full scene. You're not spanning a lot of time. So, say the events of one day. The most I've done is one week. But otherwise you're too heavy on the plot.

  4. Ack. I want to help, but I don't even do short stories. Writing a novella would freak me out.

The best I can offer is :hugs:

  5. I guess the best way to go about doing it is to think of it as a few scenes strung together? I dunno, never having written one, I'm clueless. I know you can do it though!

  6. Beats me! I can't even write short enough to fit into a category, much less a novella.

I think most of the time when I'm having trouble with a novella, I think I have too much story for such a short. NO way to get it all in without "telling" it. Good luck. Working on novella this weekend at writers' write in

  8. I don't have any advice but I do have sympathy. My writing time went major bust yesterday too. Hopefully today is better for all of us. :)
