The Volcano! It's a pretty amazing place - very diverse. From rainforest...(this is on the way to a lava tube) To the original crater, still sending up plumes of sulfurous fumes in a few places...
To the steam vents...
To the lava slides (there used to be a road under here - note the person in the upper right hand corner to get a sense of how vast this is)...
To the lava flowing into the sea (sorry about the blurriness - the sun was setting and I didn't have a tripod - not that there was a level place to set one in the lava field - and yes, the glowing stuff is real live lava)...
To the sheer power and beauty of its jagged coasts...
To the decadence of the chocolate volcano cake served at the Volcano House restaurant! Mmmm...
Thanks for sharing these pictures. They're gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteThose are my favorite pics so far-nature's wild beauty and Chocolate!!
ReplyDeleteokay, the pics are phenomenal, but you won me over with "cake". :)
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are fabulous, but the yummy Volcano Cake looks like the best part of your day. :)

hey, that volcanic slide looks like the vocano fields in my own central oregon... only it looks smoother. Our fields looked like the moonscape. Looks like you guys had fun.

I LOVE the Big Island. It's been over a decade since I've been there though. Did you try the banana pancakes for breakfast? My favorite! Loved the pics!
ReplyDeleteThe Volcanoes National Park is such an incredible place. Every time I go back to the Big Island I am drawn back to the volcano to hike, enjoy the view, and watch the active lava flow. I can appreciate the difficulty in photographing the nighttime lava flow - I brought my tripod that night and it was still tricky with the lighting and the massive winds!
