Pretty Sparkly Things

I love sparkly things. Love them. So much it's probably unhealthy. Actually, loving sparklies can't be unhealthy, can it? It's not like I give up food or sleep for them. (Seriously, have you seen me? Does it look like I've skipped a meal or an opportunity to nap?)

Boil it down, along with my fascination with clothes, shoes, hair, makeup...and basically you'll find I'm a girly girl. I love flowers and chocolate. Candles and perfume. And of course, romance.

Which is probably why I love the ugly duckling heroine so much (and probably why I tend to write heroines that go through some sort of transformation). The process is what I love. The choices are limitless, so what will be chosen and what will be tossed aside? (I'm a sucker for make-over shows, too.)

Most importantly, the hero has to be able to see the beauty in her regardless of what stage of the process she's at - the before or the after.

What are some of your favorite themes in romance?

  1. I'm a wrong side of the tracks girl. And opposites attract. And that's largely what I write.

But I love sparkly things, too. And Pink. I didn't discover my love for pink until about 5 years ago. Let me tell you, me and the color pink, we're like THAT (crossing fingers for emphasis) now.

  2. I love transformation too. I like to see a woman find out who she really is to match up a hero who is authentically himself. I really like confident men, men who are outside the box.

  3. Sorry. Not into sparklies. *lol* I'm the oddball here, but it's true. I like my heroines to be confident and strong with a sharp tongue that can bring their heroes a notch or two down. Heh!

  4. I'm not much of a sparkly girl, either, and despite VENUS ENVY, which is basically about a goddess/fairy godmother working Extreme Love Life makeovers...I'm a reunion theme kinda girl. LOVE the ones where the H&H blew it the first time and have a second chance. If my pub ever buys the second Venus book, it'll combine the best of both those themes!

  5. I love sparklies, but not delicate ones. I like bold, dramatic sparklies!

One of my favorite themes in reading is Redemption. Beauty and the Beast is basically a Redemption story.

In my writing, I think I'm a big fan of the Making Lemonade theme. Ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances who have to adapt to survive. They end up thriving.

  8. Oh, and I don't know if it's a theme, but I like a hero who kicks ass in a humble way. Like Indiana Jones.

  9. I tend to write heroines who really have to fight to get the hero, whether it's because he's elusive, unable to trust, or whatever. She has to make her mind that he's what she wants, then find a little hole and dig her way into his heart.

  10. I love fish-out-of-water type stories, like time travels where the 21st century fashionista must use her wits to make her way in a foreign world.
