Thanksgiving Traditions

I don't think my family has any weird Thanksgiving traditions - other than an hour after we eat, my dad is ready to go again. When it comes to traditions, we're pretty standard in what we do. Although I do know families with odd habits like making a certain dish every year even though no one eats it. I don't see the point in a tradition like that.

Do you have any interesting traditions? Do you always have turkey or do you do ham? Odd dishes your family serves?

Share your secrets!

  1. We host Tgiving at our house and both sets of parents come. We also have a few extras from around town join us if they don't have plans. This year, we'll have 11 folks. One year, we had 24!

I always bake a turkey and a ham. Usually I do pies as well, but this year, one of our guests is baking the pies.

As far as traditions go: we watch a lot of football and I start drinking wine about 11:00. (That's a long day with family, so the wine is really medication. LOL)

  3. No traditions here other than turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and dressing. We change the recipes for all of the above almost every year, though.

Well, and eating too much. That doesn't change.

  4. Nope. No traditions.
    We're boring. :)
But wait...we are having spiral cut ham this year instead of turkey. Woo Hoo. Call the papers! :)

  5. I love watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade on TV. As a kid, I loved watching it and as an adult, it just doesn't feel like Thanksgiving without it.

My family started a tradition long ago -- we all moved to separate states and make it a point never to get together for Thanksgiving. Mr. Robin's side, however, always has several get-togethers. I'm expected to bring my green beans amandine and pumpkin pie. That winds up being the extent of my holiday cooking.

Then we play games all afternoon -- Scrabble, dominoes, Pitch... It's a lot of fun.

  8. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but I often have a couple of turkeys on the table. Mostly I tell them to get down and use their manners or they won't get dessert.

We always have Turkey, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, cranberries, and assorted pies. Other things occasionally show up. Same recipes passed down through the family. All scrumptious.

When I was a child, we always went to my grandmother's house. She was the central location for all cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. It was great! We frequently had over 60 people.

Now, everyone is spread around the country, but whoever is in the area gets together and we switch houses each year. This year it will be at my Aunt's in Salem. My parents, aunt & uncle, our youngest son and his girlfriend, and six or seven cousins live in Oregon now. Next year will be our turn.

Well, Thanksigiving in Canada is nowhere near the extravangza it is in the States, but... usually here we have turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, probably some corn... My husband's family are real ham lovers though... so I'm wondering if this is what we'll have at Christmas (at his Mom's, though, cuz at my house it will be turkey). :D
