Guilty Pleasures

Life is full of guilty pleasures, but when you're dieting (like I am) some of those guilty pleasures become, well, guiltier.
Take chocolate for example. I adore chocolate and all it's many forms: pure chocolate, chocolate cake, chocolate cookies, body paint--*ahem* You get the picture - and I'm sure most of you agree with me on this one. Chocolate is a writer's friend, but lately I've been avoiding it like an ex-boyfriend. Sure, I've had a few tiny indulgences, but they've been so few and so tiny, calling them indulgences is being kind.
Since I can't/won't have chocolate, I have to get my "fix" elsewhere. And where have I turned, you ask?
To another guilty pleasure: reality TV.
The Hell's Kitchen finale was last night, but thankfully I've found a new show, Fat March, to sink my teeth into. It's a bizarre show, kind of like the Biggest Losers mets the Breast Cancer 3 Day (slight inside joke there). Overweight people are forced to diet (sort of. They're eating 2000 calories a day, which is more than I eat) and walk X number of miles each day. One day was 11.5 miles. Hah! During the Breast Cancer 3 Day, we had to walk 20 miles a day. But whatever.
Design Star is another truffle in my reality tv box of chocolates. Some wannabe designers get to compete for their own show on HGTV. Latest challenge was to design & decorate a room using only what they could buy at a Dollar Store. They had $399 to spend. Some of them did great and some of them wasted their money.

However, the show I'm most looking forward to is Kid Nation. Have you heard about this? A bunch of kids get dropped off in a ghost town and get to make their own civilization. It's like a supervized Lord of the Flies. Count me in!

Tell the truth now...what are your guilty pleasures?

  1. I haven't watched the last episode of Top Chef yet (it's taped) and we also taped Design Stars. Can't wait to see them!

  2. I've only watched a couple 'Design Stars' and I loved it. I just can't find it on when I want to watch it. Mine are Top Chef, Project Runway (aren't they having a new one this year???), and The Next Food Network Star. Of course, I can get away with the foodie ones because I rationalize that I'm finding new ways to cook, so the real guilty pleasure is Project Runway. What do I know from fashion? The designs I like are almost never the winners. But it's so much fun watching the interplay.

  3. What is it about dieting that drives us to watching "foodie" shows? ;-) One thing I've recently discovered for when I get that chocolate craving (and I'm also not eating anything bad right now) is "Skinny Cow" chocolate milk. It has more protein and calcium than a glass of regular milk and is only 150 calories for a glass. Yes, that's more calories than in my typical glass of regular milk, but this is much creamier and definitely is enough to satisfy that chocolate craving, while still giving me the calcium and protein my body needs. Ha! Doesn't that sound like a commercial? LOL! I don't usually keep chocolate milk on hand, but this is good during those really monster cravings. :-)

  4. Sela - I'm so glad I didn't give any spoilers then (I almost did!).

B.E. - I love love LOVE Top Chef and Project Runway. Project Runway is especially cool for me since I went to the Fashion Institue of Design. Plus, I just love fashion! It's one of those things I wish I could do myself.

Christina - You're so right. There are about 10 foodie shows on my DVR right now. It's like I want to eat with my eyes what I'm not eating with my mouth. That milk sounds good! I'll have to check it out.

  8. I was watching Pirate Master until it got cancelled. Like the cool test-market stuff at the grocery store, if I like it, then it bombs :(

Kid Nation sounds very interesting. I'll be watching that one.

  9. That's so neat about you, Kristen. I've made a couple of my own designs, but sewing has never been one of my strong points.

Oh, I almost forgot. Another guilty pleasure is the show "Don't Forget the Lyrics". I only watched it once, but I'm hooked. What a hoot.

  10. Oh, I'm with you on the reality tv guilty pleasure. I didn't watch Hell's Kitchen this year though... Something about watching a guy with anger management issues abuse people... don't know. I did watch about half of the previous season and if I'd started again, i'm sure I would've been hooked.
